Convenient Payment Methods for Foreign Visitors in China
Foreign visitors in China can enjoy a variety of convenient payment options, including Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay cards, and the digital yuan (e-CNY).
Alipay & WeChat Pay
Since July 2023, international users can link their overseas bank cards to Alipay for payments at most merchants, including restaurants, transportation services, hotels, and supermarkets. Payments can be made by scanning a merchant’s QR code or displaying one’s own payment code. Similarly, WeChat Pay also supports international bank cards and is widely accepted at dining, retail, attractions, and accommodation venues across China.
UnionPay & International Cards
Foreign nationals can use overseas bank cards bearing UnionPay, Visa, or Mastercard logos at merchants displaying the corresponding payment symbols. In cities like Shanghai, UnionPay international cards can withdraw RMB cash at any ATM or CRS machine. Additionally, foreign currency can be exchanged for RMB at banks, authorized currency exchange counters, or self-service kiosks with exchange service signage.
Digital Yuan (e-CNY)
The e-CNY app now supports a "top-up first, spend later" feature for foreign users, allowing them to register and activate a digital yuan wallet using Visa or Mastercard. After topping up, they can make payments seamlessly, further enhancing convenience for international visitors.
Other Payment Options
Foreign travelers can also:
Withdraw RMB cash via ATMs or CRS machines.
Exchange foreign currency at bank counters or authorized exchange offices.
Use UnionPay’s QuickPass (云闪付) or select international e-wallets for mobile payments.
This multi-channel payment ecosystem ensures a smooth and hassle-free experience for visitors in China.
